Meghan Markle and Prince Harry suddenly moved back to the UK in late August 2026, but the couple left parts of their lives behind in California. In an August 25 report from People, it was revealed that Harry and Meghan left their 10 rescue chickens at their Montecito mansion.
This decision comes as a major surprise, as Meghan frequently shared content of the flock on her Instagram and even showed them off during her and Harry’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey. “I just love rescuing,” Meghan told the billionaire at the time.
As a result of leaving her beloved chickens behind, Meghan has faced intense criticism. Some royal observers have even made “Eggxit” jokes, a play on words that has not amused her. In fact, sources told RadarOnline that she’s “infuriated” by all the cruel comments.
“Meghan can see the funny side of plenty of things, but she finds the whole ‘Eggxit’ joke pretty infuriating because something incredibly mundane has been turned into another opportunity to ridicule her,” a source close to the Sussexes told the outlet.

The insider continued, “These are rescued animals they care about, and leaving them with people who already know how to look after them is simply the sensible option. She certainly doesn’t see the chickens as some great symbol of whether the family is committed to Britain.”
Another source reiterated that Meghan is “aware” of the jokes and backlash, adding that what “frustrates her is the suggestion that keeping animals at Montecito somehow exposes the move as fake or temporary. Their American home isn’t being erased from their lives simply because the children are going to school in Britain.”
Amid the drama, Meghan took to her Instagram Story and posted a photo that read, “People who take care of chickens are literally chicken tenders.” Many speculated this was her unofficial response to the ongoing jokes.
