Kolkata Police plans to use the new electric motorcycles mainly for operations under Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) 112, Commissioner Ajay Nand said at the handover ceremony of the first batch. He also indicated that the department will likely soon add electric cars to its fleet. The 183 electric motorcycles will be Ultraviolette Automotive’s X-47 adventure tourer, although not in any of the usual configurations the company offers to private buyers.
The Bengaluru (Karnataka)-based startup has developed a new version of patrol called ‘Skyforce’, and the 183 units it is supplying to the Kolkata Police represent the first deployment of this configuration. The company has equipped these bikes with additional features such as LED flashing lights, sirens, sirens, a public address (PA) system, microphone mounts, walkie-talkie mounts and side panniers. Along with the custom equipment, special decals around the motorcycles instantly distinguish them from the X-47 versions the company offers to private buyers.
Ultraviolette makes the X-47 in two electric variants, and the new Skyforce version appears to be in the base variant, which combines a motor producing 27 kW and 90 Nm of torque with a 7.1 kWh battery. This configuration allows you to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds, reach a maximum speed of 145 km/h and travel up to 211 km on a single charge, according to the Indian Driving Cycle (IDC).
The top variant combines a motor generating 30 kW and 100 Nm of torque with a 10.3 kWh battery. It reaches 0 to 100 km/h in 8.1 seconds, but tops out at 145 km/h. It offers a significant gain in practicality, extending the IDC’s range to 323 km.
Commenting on the deployment, Ultraviolette CEO and Co-Founder Narayan Subramaniam said, “This is a historic moment for Ultraviolette as we become the first scale electric two-wheeler manufacturer to induct our motorcycles into the police force. Beyond the importance of this milestone, we are immensely proud to know that our technology will now contribute to the daily tasks of police officers who work tirelessly to maintain law and order and keep our cities safe.”
“The adoption of e-mobility is an important step towards sustainable and environment-friendly policing. These modern e-bikes will enhance our operational efficiency, patrolling, rapid response and community outreach, while supporting environmental sustainability,” said Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Nand.
