The world’s port operators work in confined spaces, moving enormously heavy loads with incredible precision in dangerous conditions and with razor-thin margins. It’s no surprise, then, that they are switching to electric equipment, and the Port of Helsingborg is the latest to do so, thanks to its latest order for two new Kalmar reach stackers.
Kalmar’s ERG450 electric reach stacker offers logistics fleets and port operators up to 45 tonnes of lifting capacity with less noise, fewer harmful carbon emissions and less maintenance downtime than comparable diesel models. With this latest order from the Swedish port of Helsingborg, the company will bring all those benefits to its local market.
“The ordering of these first two units under our new framework agreement represents an important step in our transition to lower-emission terminal operations,” says Christina Argelius, chief technical officer (CTO) at the port. “We are committed to replacing diesel machines in a structured and long-term way. By continuing to invest in sustainable innovations, we are proud to set a strong benchmark in the industry.”
Stack and store
In addition to the lower emissions, lower noise levels and reduced downtime offered by Kalmar’s large electric machines, the increasingly volatile costs of diesel fuel are making it impossible for fleets to budget their fuel costs, a fact that is playing a huge role in accelerating the global adoption of HDEVs by the world’s port operators.
And Sweden is proving to be no exception: Eric Wass of Kalmar Sweden commented that “moving away from diesel gives terminals much more security when fuel costs are so unpredictable. It is a pleasure to work with the Helsingborg team because they are as dedicated as we are to finding sustainable ways of working.”
The port of Helsingborg is located on the Swedish coast of Øresund (don’t look at me, I went to public school). It is the second largest container port in the Nordic country and the first Swedish port to order a fully electric reach stacker from Kalmar.
