The first shipment of garbage from Ibiza to Mallorca will leave on July 15

The first shipment of waste since Eivissa will come to Majorca in the early morning of the next July 16after the two island councils have signed the agreement to carry out the pilot test for the treatment of waste from the environmental area of Ca na Putxa to the facilities of the public urban waste management service of Mallorca, with a duration of one year, extendable for another year.

As reported by the Consell de Mallorca in a statement, in this way, a solution is provided to an environmental problem at the regional level that affects the island of Ibiza due to the imminent end of the useful life of the Ca na Putxa landfill and allows the archipelago to move towards the zero discharge objective established by the directives of the European Union.

For its part, the Consell de Mallorca will reduce the municipal solid waste (MSW) rate by ten percent, thanks to the Government’s subsidy to the Consell de Mallorca as the waste receiving administration, directly or indirectly through the amortization inherent to the cost of the investments made by the entity concessionaire of the service in the treatment plants on the island of Mallorca, for an amount of 50 million euros distributed over ten years.

The agreement signed by both island institutions indicates that the transfer of waste between islands is provided for in the Balearic Waste Law and in the Mallorca Waste Sector Master Plan, both approved in 2019.

In addition, the waste energy recovery plant in Mallorca has sufficient capacity to treat waste from the rejection fraction coming from Eivissa.

The agreement establishes that the Consell d’Eivissa will be responsible for the maritime and land transfer of waste, as well as the costs derived from transportation.

The shipment of waste will be carried out through the concessionaire company of the public urban waste management service of Ibiza, UTE Giref, and must be communicated to the concessionaire company of Mallorca, Tirme, ten days in advance. The amount of waste sent will depend on the logistical capacity and budgetary availability of the Consell de Ibiza.

The agreement determines that the rejection fraction must be packaged in bales at the facilities of the Iivissa public waste management service, compacted with strapping and shrink-wrapped. For its part, transportation will be carried out using perfectly closed platforms or vehicles with a completely closed box.

Seven trucks, five days during the week

Likewise, the pilot test will consist of the transfer of a maximum of seven trucks, five days during the week (as anticipated OKBALEARES), which will make their land tour of the island of Mallorca at night, without affecting traffic or causing other inconveniences. It is worth remembering that during the month of June, on average, 780 trucks entered Son Reus per day.

The second vice president and minister of the Environment, Pedro Bestardwill travel to Ibiza on July 15 to supervise that the first shipment is carried out normally and with all environmental guarantees and will travel on the first ship that is scheduled to arrive in Mallorca on Thursday, July 16 in the early hours of the morning.

Regarding the economic conditions, the agreement establishes that, as consideration for the treatment services provided for each of the waste fractions, the current rate, as well as the corresponding taxes, will be paid to the concessionaire of urban waste management on the island of Mallorca.

On the other hand, a commission must be established to monitor and correctly execute the pilot test. The commission will be made up of representatives of the island councils and the Government.
