The funding covers Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, and is expected to increase the number of public access chargers in the region by 27 percent. Installations will range from on-street AC charging to DC fast charging installations in shopping malls, parking lots and retail establishments. In Philadelphia itself, the number of available chargers could increase by as much as 53 percent.
A significant proportion of the investment will focus on neighborhood charging; For example, charging provider It’s Electric PA received $2.93 million to install 157 Level 2 on-street charging ports in 13 Philadelphia neighborhoods. Voltpost has also secured funding for street installations in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties.
Several larger DC fast charging projects will also receive support. Positive Energy received the largest single grant at $7.22 million, which it will use to install 54 fast-charging ports in 11 Philadelphia Parking Authority parking lots. Meanwhile, PNE Solutions America received $4.47 million for 24 ports in five locations, while Wawa secured funding for facilities in several counties.
“The Shapiro administration hit the ground running with EV funding and the results speak for themselves,” said PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. “Under the Governor’s leadership, Delaware Valley residents and travelers will soon have access to more than 500 new electric vehicle chargers in their communities.”
The latest awards are part of Pennsylvania’s NEVI Community Charging program, through which the state is allocating more than $100 million in federal funds to public charging infrastructure in local communities. This is in addition to another $58 million already allocated to charging stations along designated alternative fuel corridors and connecting routes.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the state now has 54 currently operational stations built with NEVI funds, and another 34 are planned or under construction. Since the first NEVI-funded station opened in December 2023, the network has recorded more than 183,000 charging sessions and is estimated to have avoided around 4,600 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
