The two messages from the German centers in Cologne and Weiterstadt were issued under the slogan “Nio remains committed to the German market and its users.” Responding to owners in the community section of the Nio app, a Nio representative explained that the company had decided to send notifications only to directly affected users. He described the closures as “a planned optimization in response to a European market that is changing for all manufacturers, through tariffs, more competition and slower market development.” He then denied any withdrawal from Europe or Germany.
In the future, customers will be able to book maintenance appointments through the One-Click Service in the Nio app at trained workshops in their region. The message does not specify which workshops these are.
Two of the three workshops to close
Unlike Nio Houses, which are urban showrooms without their own workshops, the centers also deal with vehicle delivery and servicing. With Cologne and Weiterstadt, Nio is simultaneously closing two of its three German workshops.
Nio has also reduced its network of Nio Houses. In April 2026, according to Electric vehicleshe Manager Magazine reported that Nio was looking for new tenants for its then four German Nio Houses in Berlin, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf and Hamburg. However, the Nio House in Hamburg was permanently closed in July 2026. The three locations in Berlin, Frankfurt and Düsseldorf remain open.
19 registrations in eight months
The consolidation of locations coincides with a phase of sharp decline in registration figures. According to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority, Nio recorded 19 new registrations from January to August 2026. This represents a decrease of 90.1 percent compared to 191 units in the same period last year. In the entire year 2025 there were still 325 vehicles, and in 2023, even 1,263.
At the same time, Nio is restructuring its European operations. In March 2026, the manufacturer confirmed a comprehensive reorganization of its activities in Europe. Since then, the organization has been coordinated more at the European level and less at the national level. As part of this, German leader David Sultzer also left the company. Already in February, Nio had also refocused its sales in Europe towards distribution partners, with the exception of Norway.
Nio will continue to support existing vehicles with service, warranty and parts. In May 2026 it became clear that Nio would not introduce a new generation of models in Europe before the end of 2027 and would not build any more battery swapping stations in the region. The European launch of the Onvo brand has since been postponed until 2028 or 2029.
