Sunday-poll-Electrek-readers-find-silver-lining-in-high-fuel.png

Over the past few weeks, we have been conducting a side survey on whether our electrek He believed there might be some hope in record fuel prices following the start of the war in Iran. After almost 2000 responses, this is what he told us.

In case you missed the survey, the question said: “They say every dark cloud has a silver lining, and the recent streak of record-high gas prices certainly looks like a dark cloud. Can we put a positive spin on it? In other words: What’s the silver lining of $7 per gallon for gas?”

Longtime reader Harry Tuttle immediately understood that, unlike most of our side polls, this one had the right answer.

I wanted to vote for Vespas!

Despite my long-standing love of the music of The Who and Peter Weller, I think there’s something to be said for traveling in a lightweight two-wheeler that gets over 100 mpg and looks like a million bucks. And while Vespa parent company Piaggio seems to have decided that people should pay $7,999 for an electric steel body, companies like Aventura X convincingly make Vespa-style composite (read: plastic) machines with usable range and electric propulsion.

Most of you, however, had other ideas.

By the numbers

Made in Excel, with the help of AI.

More than 60% of you said that if there was a silver lining to more expensive gas, it would be greater widespread interest in the adoption of hybrid and electric vehicles; and the 12% of you who chose the “less 4×4 lifted” option could be said to say the same.

It’s been fun for me to see the lifted trucks that are normally a big problem in the slow lane and going 10 degrees on the interstate. People are starting to realize that driving a crew cab pickup truck that gets less than 20 mpg for everything isn’t very smart.

Gussy23 seemed to agree. “I actually agree with the second option, but I clicked on 4×4 because I’m in NH and surrounded by idiots in giant King Cab vans (not contractors) going 80 mph down the highway because they all failed physics in school,” they wrote, probably overestimating the quality of America’s public schools (over 40% don’t even offer physics). “The concept of traction and rolling resistance coefficient (AT tires) and its influence on fuel efficiency is clearly foreign to them.”

Many posts like that followed, along with some conversations about the interconnectedness of things, the price of food, and the fact that higher gas prices make things harder for everyone; but there was one commenter who decided to let it all out and tell us how he really felt:

I don’t do GAF. The higher the better, and the more pain people feel the better. I drive an electric vehicle and will never buy gas again. I meet and talk to people every day who have the same information available to me as I did when I made the decision. Even more. Through their votes and their willful ignorance, they continue to make selfish, narrow-minded decisions that do nothing but extend their pain and suffering, while having the added benefit of dooming the rest of us.

RD LINK

I don’t know if I just didn’t drink enough coffee or didn’t get enough hugs as a kid or something, but I think I’m getting what RDLink is writing. The guys carrying coal down suburban streets on a Sunday morning don’t seem to care that they’ve been hurting everyone else for years, so maybe a little joy in misfortune is okay, right?
