French-automaker-Renault-wants-to-get-into-the-military-robot.jpg

forget what you fox newsThe addict uncle told you about the exhausted monkeys that eat cheese. The French army has centuries of victories and military traditions behind it, and Renault wants to get in on the action with a new autonomous electric vehicle platform designed to tackle the Armée de Terre’s most demanding missions.

Jointly developed by electric vehicle experts at Groupe Renault and defense experts at Belgian electronics firm John Cockerill, the new Forefront concept anticipates a new modular land vehicle that can be rapidly industrialized at a controlled cost, with unique mobility and off-road performance, and capable of autonomously navigating complex terrain. The result is a machine that could be at the forefront of logistics capabilities for civil and defense applications, allowing missions to be carried out remotely in very high-risk and difficult-to-access environments.

“Forefront Concept… demonstrates the contribution that the industrial and technological experience of the Renault Group can make to a strategic sector such as that of unmanned ground vehicles with multiple applications expected in the civil and military sectors in the coming years,” explains François Provost, CEO of the Renault Group. “This innovative project brings together two complementary areas of expertise: that of Groupe Renault in the rapid, large-scale and cost-effective development and production of reliable, high-performance technological products, and that of John Cockerill in the defense industry.”

Renault is quick to point out that its new concept is not only suitable for military work. Although it’s worth noting that the image provided by Renault, above, isn’t just a waste of AI: it wouldn’t be practical if it were real, without a really obvious way to put those CPR tubes on or off. That said, presenting your military killer robot as a construction mule is at least more believable than the “ambulance” and “troop transport” use cases we’ve seen touted for similar concepts on the US side.

Forefront appears to be little more than a rendering at this stage, with the first of Forefront’s conceptual prototypes participating in a series of exercises and tests over the coming months to further refine the concept.
