Google kicked off 2026 by adding Personal Intelligence to Gemini, allowing its AI to extract more data to formulate responses. It started as a paid feature but eventually reached all Gemini users. However, this feature was not available in the car until now. Google is rolling out Personal Intelligence to Android Auto and Google built-in, and thankfully it’s still an optional feature.
As Google points out, generative AI results are best “when it knows the world and it knows you,” which is correct in some uncomfortable way. The more context you can provide to a model, the better the result will be at the end of the token shuffle. Since Google already has a lot of your data, it sees Personal Intelligence as a differentiator from other AI systems. You don’t need to provide AI context because you already have it from apps like Gmail and Calendar.
Personal Intelligence begins its implementation in Android Auto today and will reach vehicles with Google integrated in the coming months. Also, “Google built-in” is questionable branding, but it refers to cars that run Google software in the infotainment system instead of projecting an interface from your phone. Very few vehicles have Google integrated, but Google usually releases new features for them first. This time it’s the other way around.
Google says Personal Intelligence is a natural fit for the car, allowing you to focus on the road instead of providing detailed instructions to your digital assistant. For example, you can say “take me to my doctor’s appointment” and Gemini will be able to pull that data from your connected calendar. You can also take advantage of visual analytics to find locations in your photos to begin navigation.
