The Ford Fathom is expected to go on sale in early 2027, starting at $28,350. Ford CEO Jim Farley admitted: “It’s going to be a huge effort to launch this at scale, at cost and on time.”
Ford Fathom production still faces obstacles
After Ford said last month that it was on track to begin Fathom production in 2027, that timeline now faces uncertainty.
Speaking in the Automotive News Congress 2026 This week, Ford CEO Jim Farley explained how its Universal Electric Vehicle (UEV) platform could be the automaker’s answer to Chinese brands like BYD, which are rapidly gaining market share in Europe and other key global markets.
Farley said the company realized at one point that a BYD EV would have about a 20% cost advantage over the Fathom battery.
To remain competitive, the team modified the motors, gearboxes and inverters, allowing for smaller batteries than BYD’s.
While it sounds promising, Farley admitted that “it’s going to be a huge effort to launch this at scale, at cost and on time.”
Farley added that “we have not yet landed the plane for mass production of UEVs.” Ford previously said the first Fathom prototypes are scheduled to roll off the assembly line at its 3 million-square-foot Louisville Assembly Plant (LAP) in 2027.
Ford is investing $5 billion between its Louisville Assembly Plant and BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan to prepare for UEV production.
According to a recent Wall Street Journal According to a report citing sources familiar with the matter, Ford aims to sell 100,000 Fathoms in its first year. As obstacles to UEV production remain, this could be difficult to overcome.
When it goes on sale, still expected in early 2027 until Ford confirms otherwise, the Fathom will start at $28,350 for the standard range battery model.
Update 10/01/2026: A Ford spokesperson said electrek“We’ve said before, ‘Fathom will launch in 2027,’ and there’s no change to that.”
Farley previously said the Fathom will offer more interior passenger space than a Toyota RAV4. It will also be the first to have Apple Maps integrated directly into the navigation system, a “large touchscreen,” wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, BlueCruise, two-way charging capabilities, and a digital key.
We also know the electric van will have a NACS port after some prototypes were spotted charging at a Tesla Supercharger this summer.
