BMW’s Neue Klasse portfolio continues to grow. Following in the footsteps of the iX3 mid-size SUV and subsequently the i3 saloon and the iX5 flagship, the iX4 is now ready. The coupe SUV, with a starting price of 70,900 euros, is located almost exactly between the Audi Q6 Sportback e-tron and the Porsche Macan Electric. Market launch is planned for March 2027, and the BMW will be available to order as iX4 40 xDrive and iX4 50 xDrive. The top model, the iX4 M60 xDrive, will be available to order from January 2027.

All variants of the BMW iX4 feature an electric motor on each axle, providing all-wheel drive. For the iX4 40 xDrive, BMW specifies a system power of 275 kW and a maximum torque of 520 Newton-meters. The iX4 50 xDrive delivers 345 kW and 645 Nm. This allows the two models to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 and 4.9 seconds respectively, with a maximum speed of 210 km/h.

Up to 400 kW charging power in the iX4

Based on Gen6 eDrive technology, the 800-volt architecture enables DC fast charging up to 400 kW. The large 108.7 kWh battery can recharge enough energy for up to 387 kilometers in ten minutes, according to the manufacturer. The maximum autonomy is 828 km. The smaller 82.6 kWh battery, with a charging power of 300 kW, can add up to 301 kilometers of range in ten minutes. In total, it offers a maximum range of up to 638 km.

Both batteries can be charged from 10 to 80 percent in 21 minutes. As standard, the iX4 charges at 11 kW from a wall box, with an option for 22 kW charging. The SUV, with its fast rear, also supports bi-directional charging (V2L, V2H, V2G).

A decidedly sporty character.

Mike Reichelt, Head of Neue Klasse, BMW Compact and Mid-size, explains: “With the new all-electric BMW iX4, we are expanding the Neue Klasse portfolio with a particularly emotional vehicle. Its striking proportions, elegant coupé silhouette and Neue Klasse technologies combine to create a unique character. It unites sportiness, expressiveness and innovative technology, thus making a strong statement in our all-electric BMW portfolio.”

Although the spec sheet does not yet reveal how “expressive” the new iX4 really is, the manufacturer equips the coupe SUV with the M Sport package as standard. This includes special design elements, 20-inch alloy wheels, an M Sport braking system with blue brake callipers and a sports steering wheel.

With a curb weight of 2,260 to 2,380 kg, 4.78 m long, 1.90 m wide and 1.60 m high, the iX4, like many sports eSUVs, requires considerable tuning experience to maneuver its inert mass with agility through corners. The basis of this effort at BMW, along with an adaptable lightweight chassis with a double-jointed front axle connecting the body, axle mounts and battery, and a five-link rear axle with separate springs and shock absorbers, is the Heart of Joy. Together with the BMW Dynamic Performance Control Driving Stack, this system regulates driving and driving dynamics ten times faster than previous systems.

Inside, BMW offers passengers elegant sports seats with memory function and the so-called Travel & Comfort System as standard. As extras, sports or multifunction seats are available, as well as heated rear seats. The rear seat backrest can be folded down in a ratio of 40:20:40. According to the manufacturer, the standard panoramic glass roof and the rearward-sloping roof line do not negatively influence the interior space thanks to the vehicle’s architecture.

The cockpit is oriented towards the driver and offers a large number of information sources, including a 3D head-up display, a panoramic head-up display that spans the entire width of the dashboard and a 17.9-inch central screen. Behind this is the latest version of OS X, which also allows customization of sound, lighting, displays and streaming. The assistance systems of the BMW iX4 are also supported by AI and enable partially automated driving and parking.

450 kW and 875 Nm of torque

Shortly after the market launch of the iX4, the high-performance variant, the BMW iX4 M60 xDrive, will follow. Also in this case there is an electric motor on each axle, which together deliver a system power of 450 kW and a torque of 875 Newton-meters. This allows the M60 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. The top-of-the-range version of the iX4 is limited to 240 km/h. According to the manufacturer, the maximum range is 777 km.

Standard equipment for the BMW iX4 M60 xDrive includes 21-inch alloy wheels, a black grille and distinctive lighting signatures. Inside, M sports seats with 10-way power adjustment, an M-specific display including a power meter and an M sports steering wheel with a 12 o’clock marker and shift paddles are part of the standard package. Also on board is a specially tuned M adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers and sports steering, an M limited-slip differential on the rear axle and two exclusive driving modes, ‘M Sport’ and ‘M Sport Plus’.
