Volkswagen is offering its Jetta M6 electric sedan for the Chinese market with nearly 290 miles of range according to CLTC for less than $12,000 (USD), and if that’s not what “people’s pay” should be about, I don’t know what is.
Launched as a joint venture between FAW and the Volkswagen Group, the Jetta brand’s first battery-electric car is finally here, and it’s a genuinely affordable, capable and pretty decent-looking family sedan, in the same way VW’s original Type I was when it was first developed in the 1940s.
The new Jetta M6 was previously launched in three variants: 465 Pro, 555 Max and 555 Ultra; each priced at 79,800 yuan (~$11,800), 89,800 yuan, and 99,800 yuan, respectively, with model numbers corresponding to the car’s estimated CLTC range in kilometers (which estimates around ~285 and 345 miles, if you’re curious).
Built on FAW’s Jiesi architecture, the M6 measures 4,806mm long and 1,868mm wide, putting it right in the sedan sweet spot between the Civic/Corolla and Accord/Camry teams, and just a few mm away from that and the Tesla Model 3, so it should have plenty of room for young professionals and families, but the M6’s real selling point is its technology.
High technology, low cost
Inside, the Jetta M6 offers an 8.88″ driver display along with a large 15.6″ central touchscreen that integrates Chinese AI assistants Doubao and DeepSeek and ships with Apple CarPlay integrated. Advanced ADAS with “intelligent cruise assist, automatic emergency braking and automated parking” is standard.
The base “465 Pro” version of the Jetta M6 comes equipped with a 42.9 kWh LFP battery and a 113 kW (~150 hp) electric motor driving the front wheels, a combination the company says is good for an 8.3-second acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph). Stepping up to the 555 versions gets you a larger 51.9 kWh battery and a more powerful 145 kW (~195 hp) motor that drops that speed to 6.8 seconds.
Both the 42.9 and 51.0 kWh batteries are lithium iron phosphate offerings supplied by CALB, and charging from 20% to 80% takes about 30 minutes.
Mass market model
Would those features and performance figures be enough for you to look at something like this in the US, even at twice the price? It seems to me that North America’s VW dealers need all the help they can get, and a volume leader like this with a “back to basics” ad campaign that plays on a different kind of nostalgia: nostalgia for a time when people could afford a Jetta, perhaps? – could be a winner.
