Under the partnership, Yadea will supply electric two-wheelers and other products to Spiro, which will integrate them into its network of battery swapping stations. Additionally, the companies plan to jointly develop two-wheeled platforms adapted to local road conditions and commercial use. The partners have not revealed specific volumes or a timeline.
Spiro currently operates in Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Cameroon. In June, the company reported that it already operates more than 100,000 electric vehicles and 2,500 battery swapping stations in its seven markets. A key focus is motorcycle taxis, widely known as Boda Bodas in many African countries.
To further expand its operations, Spiro has raised significant capital this year. An initial $215 million funding round was expanded in June with an additional $55 million from Chinese investor NewTrails Capital, bringing the total round to the $270 million Spiro now cites.
Yadea, an international vehicle manufacturer, also joins the association. The Chinese company claims to have sold more than 100 million electric two-wheelers in more than 100 countries and operates ten production centres. Spiro, for its part, brings to the collaboration its existing network of battery swapping stations and its operational presence in African markets.
