The new XCMG SDA411 terminal truck concept is all-electric, cabless, and has an L4 autonomous technology stack designed specifically for unmanned logistics, and if XCMG has its way, it looks to be the future of haul truck operations.
Whether you call them terminal trucks, yard dogs, or anything else, these heavy-duty trucks do an ideal job for electrification. It’s about low-speed, high-torque, short-distance, precision operations, all the time. And the silent, vibration-free, instant-power operation of the electric motor is in its element.
Chinese equipment brand XCMG understands this and is taking the electric terminal truck concept one step further with the debut of an all-new, cabless, 100% autonomous design.
“Without a cabin and an L4 autonomous driving system, the platform is designed specifically for unmanned logistics,” XCMG said on LinkedIn. “Its 360° perception system enables autonomous navigation, obstacle avoidance, task execution and parking, supporting continuous mixed-traffic operations in demanding environments.”
That same post included a video showing the SDA411 zipping around the XCMG campus, making some emergency stops, and approaching a charger to be plugged in by a human assistant (I guess you haven’t heard about Fortescue’s trick with the KUKA welding robot yet). You can check out the post yourself below.
As for the autonomous aspect, while I generally side with work and humanity over management and technology, there is some truth to the industry’s claims that young people don’t want to drive trucks anymore, even with the promise of six-figure salaries.
Combine that with an aging workforce and not enough new talent entering the field, and virtually every industry sector is struggling with a serious operator shortage. Autonomous equipment like the SDA411 could help address that shortage, keeping goods moving even when there aren’t enough drivers to go around. And rather than simply replacing workers, the technology could allow experienced operators to supervise multiple vehicles, take on supervisory roles and stay in the industry longer, while making these jobs accessible to people who otherwise wouldn’t be able to do them.
If XCMG has its way, we’ll see how it all plays out sooner rather than later. In the meantime, we’ll have to settle for hearing what you think about the SDA411 and how it could affect brands like Kalmar and Orange EV in the comments.
