BMW says goodbye to the iX. With the 2026 model all but sold out, BMW is preparing to unveil its replacement, which already looks like a big improvement.

The BMW iX sells out when the iX5 arrives

The iX went on sale in the US in 2022 as BMW’s first dedicated electric SUV. After a brief four-year run, BMW confirmed earlier this year that it would discontinue the iX in the US after the 2026 model year to make room for its next generation of all-electric vehicles.

It didn’t take long for BMW to sell out of its inventory, and the 2026 iX models were virtually sold out in the US.

The iX home page now redirects you to the new BMW X5. According to an online car research company CarsDirectThere are about 10 new iX models left nationwide.

BMW’s Neue Klasse vehicles, starting with the new 2027 iX3, mark a radical departure from its previous electric vehicles.

At the center is the Neue Klasse platform, which features BMW’s sixth-generation (Gen6) eDrive, new batteries and an 800-volt electrical architecture.

BMW said the new Gen6 eDrive system offers 30% higher charging speeds and driving range than its previous system, with some models seeing an even greater increase.

The 2027 iX3 50 xDrive, BMW’s first Neue Klasse vehicle, starts at $61,500 and offers an EPA-estimated driving range of up to 434 miles. By comparison, the 2026 iX xDrive 60 had an EPA range of up to 364 miles.

While the iX3 is a smaller, compact electric SUV compared to the iX, BMW is preparing to launch the iX5 as a more direct replacement.

The gasoline-powered 2027 X5 40 xDrive is on sale now, starting at $72,100, but BMW is expected to launch the electric iX5 in early 2027.

A few weeks ago, BMW put the new iX5 60 xDrive through its paces at an international media event in Southern California to demonstrate how quickly it can charge.

During the event, the new iX5 reached a peak of 464 kW. BMW said that with a maximum charge of up to 460 kW, the iX5 60 xDrive can add up to 170 miles of range in 10 minutes. Charging the battery from 10% to 80% takes only 22 minutes.

Using a 144 kWh battery, BMW said the electric SUV will offer up to an estimated range of 435 miles on a single charge.

The iX5 is powered by a dual-motor, all-wheel drive powertrain, producing a combined 578 hp (425 kW) and 593 lb-ft of torque. BMW says it can go from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and tow up to 6,000 pounds.

Inside, the iX5 will be an upgrade from the iX, adopting BMW’s Neue Klasse design. The setup includes a 17.9-inch navigation touchscreen and BMW’s new panoramic vision that extends across the entire windshield. You can also choose to add the optional 14.6″ passenger screen for a third screen.

At 197.2″ long, 78.7″ wide and 68.9″ tall, the iX5 is slightly longer and taller than the outgoing iX, with a more traditional SUV design.

BMW is expected to open orders for the new iX5 60 xDrive this month, starting at $79,800, with a full launch in early 2027. It will be BMW’s first all-electric vehicle built in the US.

Production is scheduled to begin at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina at the end of the year, with first deliveries expected in early 2027.
