Movistar Plus reinforces its investment in Spanish fiction to be able to produce 26 series a year

After a general restructuring within the fiction area management, Movistar Plus announced this Tuesday, July 7, that it will significantly expand its commitment to its own content: more titles on the platform and new collaboration models. The objective is to reach 26 Spanish series per year: doubling the volume of current original productions, a standard and seal of quality and cultural link, as well as increasing co-productions and purchase of rights.

Following the dismissal of Domingo Corral as director of Fiction and Entertainment at Movistar Plus in 2025 and the departure of a large part of the management team that he created – Guillermo Farré, responsible for the Spanish cinema area, and the executive producer, Fran Araújo – the company has announced a series of objectives regarding the original Spanish series.

New objectives

The goal is to reach 26 Spanish series per year, more than two premieres per month, in the next three years. This increase will be especially notable in the Movistar Plus Originals, where the platform wants to double the proposal annually: from the current 8 productions to 16. It will also reach this goal by looking for co-production and/or licensing models, which until now had been very minority.

«We are facing a new stage for Spanish fiction on Movistar Plus. We want to offer our clients more stories, reach more audiences and continue to be a strategic partner for Spanish talent and production companies. “We will grow in volume without giving up the creative and editorial demands that define our content,” says Juan Andrés García Ropero ‘Bropi’, Content Director of Movistar Plus.

During the last two weeks, the Content team has held a round of meetings with nearly 60 production companies, who have had the opportunity to present almost a hundred new ideas to Movistar Plus. These meetings have also served to share the new strategy with them and strengthen ties with the creative community, with which the platform has a long history.

More original series

Some titles planned for 2027 and that are part of this increase: ‘Ardora’ (directed by Jorge Coira and starring Carolina Yuste and Javier Gutiérrez), Everything you need (created by Marcel Barrena and Alberto Marini and starring David Verdaguer, Enric Auquer, Marina Salas and Mónica López) and Iruña 97 (starring Clara Galle and Álvaro Cervantes; a series based on an original idea by Natxo López, co-written with Marina Parés and David Pérez Sañudo) and the second seasons of Many people have to die, The Centeroy The other world (The other side) They will arrive in 2027 on Movistar Plus along with new titles that will be announced soon.

Movistar series Macarena García and Anna Castillo in ‘Many people have to die’ (Movistar PLUS).

More acquisitions of Spanish series

Along with original production, Movistar Plus promotes a growth strategy with the incorporation of Spanish series through rights purchases, thus expanding the volume of titles and the diversity of genres at a lower cost.

These acquisitions allow us to reinforce the relevance of Spanish fiction within the platform, maintaining the quality and differentiation standards that define the Movistar Plus editorial proposal.

Some of the titles are: She, damn soul (Mediaset), 33 days (Atresplayer) and Our house (3Cat)

More co-productions

The third way of growth in the volume of series consists of strengthening co-productions. A strategic line that Movistar Plus was already carrying out and that will now be reinforced.

For example, Movistar Plus continues its close collaboration with ARTE France which, after participating in The new years and Anatomy of a moment, He has also entered as co-producer in the series kill a bearwhich will premiere on the platform in the last quarter of the year.

These co-productions allow Movistar Plus to participate in projects of greater creative and industrial dimension through alliances with international partners, maintaining exclusivity in the national territory and optimizing investment and improving the efficiency of the production model.

Another example of a more recent international co-production would be Patagoniawhich has already begun filming in the south of Chile and the Basque Country. Starring the actress Itziar Ituño (The Money Heist), directed by Rodrigo Susarte (hidden island) and written by Luis Barrales, Anastasia Ayazi and Germán Maggiori.
