The European Investment Bank has confirmed the project as a priority investment for Bucharest, announced Mayor Ciprian Ciucu. Facebook. The financing is non-refundable and the city must cover only the VAT.
The plans include ten new trams to replace the V3A(M) vehicles, 45 trolleybuses to replace the older Astra-Ikarus models and 40 battery electric buses. Of the electric buses, 20 will be 12 meters long and 20 will be 10 meters long. They will replace Mercedes-Benz Citaro buses with Euro 3 diesel engines.
Bucharest has been advancing for some time in the electrification of its bus fleet. At the beginning of 2026, the city received 22 battery-operated trolleybuses of the Yutong U12 type. Thanks to the additional batteries, these vehicles can travel up to 20 km without being connected to the catenary.
Bucharest expands its fleet of electric STBs
Previously, 100 Solaris Trollino 12 trolleybuses had already been delivered to Bucharest. In addition, the city ordered 100 battery-electric buses from Karsan and announced the construction of 100 charging stations.
For the 40 battery electric buses currently planned, Ciucu cites the further expansion of charging infrastructure as the essential next step. This infrastructure will be designed so that the vehicles can be deployed immediately upon acquisition.
With the new vehicles, the city aims to modernize the fleet of Societății de Transport București and replace the old trolleybuses and diesel buses. According to the mayor, the project will also improve the quality of public transportation and reduce local air pollution.
