Amazon-prepares-to-deploy-more-than-3000-TATA-electric-delivery.jpg

Amazon is not only electrifying its delivery operations in the United States. The big box stores that Bezos built understand the benefits of electric vehicles as well as anyone, and they are working hard to deploy electric vehicles everywhere they can. And now, that global push is spreading to India.

Indian automaker TATA Motors has announced a deal with Amazon to deploy 3,000 electric trucks on Amazon’s transportation network in India. When operational, it will be the largest electric truck deployment in India and will mark Amazon’s most significant move to extend the electrification of its Indian fleet beyond last-mile logistics.

“India is accelerating towards electric mobility and the realization of Viksit Bharat 2047,” says Shri HD Kumaraswamy, Honorable Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel, Government of India. “The collaboration between TATA Motors and Amazon shows what that looks like in practice: a sustained demand for a national logistics network met by electric trucks made in India. Through PM E-DRIVE, the Government will continue to support this transition and I look forward to more such efforts to drive green logistics.”

Apart from being a big deal for TATA, the 3,000 electric truck deal represents a major coup for the electric truck fleet deployed in India and is an important step towards large-scale electrification of freight transportation across the country; That’s not just good for Amazon’s fuel bills, it’s good for everyone and everything that breathes air, too.

“Electrifying our logistics and transportation network is an important part of Amazon’s goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040,” says Abhinav Singh, Vice President of Operations, Amazon, APAC, Middle East, Africa and Turkey. “We have made significant progress in India, with more than 15,000 electric vehicles operating in more than 500 cities. To enable this transition, we are also supporting the development of infrastructure and solutions that facilitate the adoption of electric vehicles for our transport and driver partners. We are now setting a bold vision to scale electric road transport, addressing one of the most difficult challenges in the decarbonization of transport. Our collaboration with TATA Motors marks an important step towards realizing this vision. By combining our strengths, “We intend to accelerate the deployment of electric vehicles and trucks across more routes, starting with intra-city operations and expanding to India’s major freight corridors.”

The truck that Amazon will deploy in these record numbers is a version of the Tata Ultra E.7, a 7.5 ton (~16,000 lb) straight truck powered by a 240 kW (~320 hp) electric motor that draws power from a 96 kWh LFP battery pack. The truck’s manufacturers claim a charged range of up to 130 km (~80 miles) on a single charge, with DC fast charging capable enough to keep the trucks charged between deliveries.

Amazon’s new TATA electric delivery trucks will support the transportation of goods between warehouses, which means traveling across cities and along India’s national freight corridors.
