What do you really need to keep running when the power goes out? For most homes, the refrigerator, Wi-Fi, phone, and a few other essentials come first. Buying enough battery storage for every appliance in the house may come later, and that’s the appeal of BLUETTI’s latest release, the Apex 200 portable power station.

The Apex 200 starts with 2.56 kWh of storage and 3.2 kW of continuous AC output, with the option to add batteries when you need longer backup. Built-in RV hookups also mean you can earn your keep between power outages.

BLUETTI launches the Apex 200 on November 4, with super early standalone pricing starting at $1,099 until November 18. Electrek readers can get an additional 5% discount with code ELECTREK5OFF.

Here’s how to determine which configuration is worth purchasing for your home or RV.

Get started with the battery you need now

The Apex 200 takes the expandable design of BLUETTI’s flagship Apex series and puts it in a smaller package.

You get a 2560 Wh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The 3.2 kW of continuous AC output increases to 3.6 kW when an expansion battery is connected or the unit is actively charging.

The case holds all that at 36.2 liters and weighs 26.9 kg (59.3 lb). You will need two hands to move it, but it is convenient to move it between your house and your RV.

BLUETTI’s UltraCell technology offers an industry-leading energy density of 70.7 Wh/L; however, the Apex 200 is more than 50% smaller in volume than competitors in its class. For the RV owner, that smaller footprint frees up space for other equipment.

There’s also a tilted display and four app-controllable AC outlets. It may not seem like a big deal, but when your battery is on the floor or under your desk and you want to check or redirect its charge, it means you don’t have to bend over.

BLUETTI calls their approach “Start Small, Scale Big, and Power Bigger.” BLUETTI says Apex 300 users reported that they liked the modular design but wanted something easier to handle on a day-to-day basis. The Apex 200 gives them a lower entry point, with room to add capacity rather than replacing the head unit.

How much battery do you need during a blackout?

Before purchasing a portable power station, you’ll want to know how much energy your appliances consume and how much energy they use over time.

For example, a 150W appliance running continuously for 10 hours consumes 1500Wh. A 1,500 W appliance consumes that same amount in one hour. Running a coffee maker briefly is a different proposition than keeping a high-consumption appliance on all afternoon.

An approximate calculation of the execution time is: Usable battery capacity in watt-hours ÷ average load in watts = hours of operation.

Divide the Apex 200’s rated 2,560 Wh by a constant 150 W charge, and you get about 17 hours before taking into account conversion losses and power usage from the battery system itself. The actual execution time will be less.

Refrigerators complicate that calculation because their compressors turn on and off. Where possible, check measured daily power usage, along with cranking demand – motors may briefly draw more power when cranking.

For a short outage, the standalone unit is a sensible start

If your typical outage lasts four to 12 hours, start by looking at the Apex 200 alone.

BLUETTI estimates it can run a 150W refrigerator for 10 to 12 hours or support low-power essentials like CPAP, Wi-Fi routers, and mobile devices for two to three days, depending on the equipment and how it’s used. That doesn’t mean all the devices on that list will work together for three days. Their combined load determines the execution time.

The Apex 200 also gives you more control over where that energy goes. Four independently controllable smart AC outlets built into the unit – no need to buy smart plugs! – allows you to turn individual devices on and off via the BLUETTI app, set schedules and apply charging status controls. So if something doesn’t need power overnight, you can turn it off at the outlet and save refrigerator battery.

BLUETTI believes this feature is an industry first for portable power stations. The system also works with Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Home Assistant.

A UPS function switches connected equipment to battery power in 15 milliseconds. Check that changeover time with your equipment requirements, especially for a CPAP or other sensitive device.

With the AC outlet on and the display off, idle consumption drops to just 10.5W.

For a multi-day outage, add batteries and plan to recharge

A winter freeze or severe storm can leave you without power for days. That’s when adding additional storage starts to make more sense.

For typical power outages, adding one or two BLUETTI B300K batteries can extend essential home backup to two or three days.

But you can go further. An Apex 200 supports up to six B500K expansion batteries, bringing its maximum capacity to 33.28 kWh.

But a larger battery still needs to be recharged eventually. The Apex 200 accepts up to 3kW of solar input through two independent channels:

  • A 2 kW high voltage MC4 input with an MPPT range of 60 V to 280 V.
  • One independent 1kW low voltage XT60 input.

With a properly configured set of SORA 500 portable solar panels that make the most of those inputs, BLUETTI says the base battery can be charged from 0 to 80% in 50 minutes, or reach 100% in 1.7 hours using solar power alone.

A solar generator setup allows you to recharge during the day. The Apex 200 can also be charged by wall air conditioning, vehicle charging and compatible gas generator charging. A proper connection to a 30A generator can help recharge the battery when solar production is insufficient.

For more extensive home backup, see full setup

The Apex 200 can also be part of a larger home battery backup system via BLUETTI’s Hub A1 parallel box.

BLUETTI specifies up to 6 kW of continuous AC output and approximately 100 kWh of storage in a parallel system using up to three Apex 200 units.

That’s a significant increase over the standalone battery, but your daily consumption still matters. A constant 1 kW charge uses 24 kWh in 24 hours. High-draining appliances can make a large battery seem much smaller.

BLUETTI positions its largest configurations for three to four days of essential panel backup. How close you are depends on your batteries, appliances, and their recharging capacity.

If you want automatic backup through your home electrical panel, please confirm the compatible transfer equipment, supported circuits, voltage and output for the exact package. Those details determine what you can actually continue to execute.

Which Apex 200 Home Package Should You Choose?

Start with the most likely interrupt and then decide if you need more runtime, a load source, or both.

what you need Suggested settings Why does it make sense?
Backup for a brief power outage Apex 200 standalone Covers priority plug-in loads without purchasing expansion batteries in advance
Solar charging at home or off the grid Apex 200 + SORA 500 solar panel Adds natural light charging, with room to build a larger compatible solar panel
More runtime for family essentials Apex 200 + one or two B300K batteries Extends essential home backup to two or three days
A larger home backup setup Up to three Apex 200s via HUB A1 It offers a continuous AC output of 6 kW and a total capacity of around 100 kWh for whole-house backup.

Additional batteries extend run time. Solar panels or another charging source recharge them. For outages that go on for days, it may be worth having both.

Road trip? Integrated ports matter

When buying a camper or camper, choosing a battery involves more than just capacity. Among its 10 outlet ports are two connections that RV owners will appreciate having built-in.

He Native RV Outlet 30A TT-30R Plugs directly into travel trailer ground outlets for 120V power.

He 12V/30A Anderson Port It can directly power compatible DC equipment, including portable refrigerators and communications equipment. This avoids converting battery power to AC and then back to DC, eliminating unnecessary conversion steps.

For charging between campsites, the system can be paired with the BLUETTI Charger 2, which Combines solar and alternator charging support. It allows you to use driving time to recharge the battery by faster charging the vehicle’s alternator and then use solar power when parked.

The mobile package recommended by BLUETTI is the Apex 200 + SORA 500 Solar Panel + Charger 2. You’ll get camping storage, solar charging during your stay, and alternator charging along the way. The compatible camping AC offers you another option.

Should you buy the BLUETTI Apex 200 or Apex 300?

The Apex 200 is the best choice if you value a smaller cabinet, easier transportation, native RV ports, and a lower initial cost. You can start with 2.56 kWh and expand to 33.28 kWh in one unit, or approximately 100 kWh in a fully expanded parallel system.

The Apex 300 is worth considering if your priority is higher native output and capacity for a system that will mostly stay at home. offers 3,840 W of power and 2,764.8 Wh of battery storageand BLUETTI positions it for more advanced home backup, including compatible 120V/240V configurations.

For someone who wants a battery for both blackouts and RV travel, the size and connections of the Apex 200 make a useful combination. You can buy the storage you need now and add more when your power needs change.
