BYD’s upcoming multipurpose vehicle (MPV) was spotted on a car transporter and at one of its Flash charging stations ahead of its expected debut later this year.

BYD prepares to launch the Ocean minivan

Spy images of BYD’s new Ocean MPV testing in China have begun to flood the Internet in recent days.

BYD first unveiled the Ocean-V concept at the 2026 Beijing Motor Show in April, a futuristic preview of its first Ocean series MPV.

The concept featured a sliding center screen and two unique modes: Camping and Movie. In camping mode, the seats fold down to create a bed or rotate to face each other.

Movie mode, on the other hand, transforms the vehicle into a private mobile cinema with a large screen that folds out of the dashboard.

With cool features and a futuristic design, many couldn’t wait to see what the production version would look like.

The prototype seen during testing is a bit disappointing. Although she is still disguised, the image of Autohome shows a vehicle that looks very different from the Ocean-V concept from earlier this year.

The image shows a boxy design with a wide grille and traditional door handles, which looks drastically different from BYD’s latest vehicles.

Spotted on a BYD Flash Charger in China, the vehicle was equipped with a massive roof-mounted LiDAR. A video (shown below) of the new model on a car carrier from ThinkerCar offers a closer look.

Local reports suggest that the Ocean MPV will be 5,145mm long, 1,970mm wide and 1,805mm high, with a wheelbase of 3,045mm. It is also expected to feature a 2+2+3 seating arrangement with space for seven passengers.

BYD has yet to confirm any powertrain or battery specifications, but given the massive front grille, the Ocean minivan is expected to use BYD’s DM-i plug-in hybrid system and its Blade batteries.

BYD’s current lineup of MPVs includes the Denza D9, a flagship model that starts above 300,000 yuan ($45,000), and the Xia, priced between 200,000 and 300,000 yuan ($30,000 to $45,000). The Ocean minivan is expected to fill that gap.

Zhang Zhou, general manager of BYD’s Ocean series, said the company hopes to launch its first MPV by the end of 2026.
