BYD acquires ultra-luxury brands with Yangwang EV sedan
Yangwang is BYD’s highest-end brand with ultra-luxury models ranging from electric hypercars to extreme off-road SUVs.
BYD also uses Yangwang to showcase its innovative technologies. In the past, Yangwang vehicles debuted disruptive new technology, including BYD’s four-motor e4 platform, second-generation Blade batteries and flash charging, and its Disus intelligent body control system.
A new Yangwang model was recently seen testing in China which, according to local reports, will propel the brand into the elite segment.
New images of the vehicle have appeared online, revealing a design almost identical to the Rolls-Royce Phantom. It will even be the first BYD vehicle with rear-hinged tourist doors.
Hu Xiaoqing, general manager of Yangwang, shared some images of the flagship sedan on Weibo and confirmed that the name of the car has not yet been finalized. Internally, BYD calls it “HU” for now.
The new model is “the culmination of three years of meticulous development by Yangwang, features the brand’s signature design language and is an ultra-luxury executive sedan.”
No other details were revealed, but an image shows the vehicle at BYD’s Flash charging station, suggesting it can support megawatt fast charging.
According to China AutohomeYangwang’s electric business-class sedan will be BYD’s first electric vehicle to use solid-state batteries, among other new technologies.
Zheng Yu, CEO of Yangwang, confirmed that the new model will feature “unprecedented disruptive technology” but did not reveal details.
The sedan measures about 5.5 meters long, approximately the size of the Mercedes-Benz Maybach S-Class.
BYD Executive Vice President Stella Li confirmed in an exclusive interview with Carwow.com As of earlier this month, the company is “in the leading position” in solid-state battery technology and its commercialization.
Li said BYD will “prove it” with its first vehicle equipped with solid-state batteries that will debut in 2027.
BYD’s battery research and development team is “very strong,” Li said, adding that they are studying battery chemistry as well as the manufacturing and equipment needed for mass production.
FinDreams, BYD’s battery business, aims to start producing sulfur-based solid-state batteries in limited batches in 2027, expanding mass production by 2030.
Will Yangwang’s ultra-luxury sedan be the first to showcase BYD’s solid-state batteries? If so, it will likely be offered in higher-priced variants, while standard models could still use BYD’s latest Blade LFP batteries.
Aside from that, the flagship model is expected to feature BYD’s four-motor e4 platform, delivering more than 1,000 hp combined.
BYD hasn’t announced pricing or any details yet, but reports estimate the Yangwang sedan will cost more than 2 million yuan, or nearly $300,000.
