Chery will market the new charging system under the name ‘Volt-Dragon’ and claims that charging a battery from 10 to 97 percent with this device takes 6 minutes and 50 seconds. The manufacturer specifies a maximum power of 1.44 MW.
According to the industry portal China automobile newsChery introduced the ‘Volt-Dragon’ system at its internal Global Innovation Conference, along with its own large AI language model called CheryMind. This model is intended to link up with future robotaxis, L4 assistance systems and the ‘Volt-Dragon’ charging infrastructure. However, it is still unclear how this integration will work in practice.
Meanwhile, BYD, Huawei and Geely have already started rolling out their own megawatt chargers. BYD claims that its Flash Charging system takes 6 minutes and 27 seconds to charge from 10 to 98 percent. The other two companies specify a charging window of between 8 and 9 minutes for the same autonomy.
Chery has also announced that the ‘Volt-Dragon’ system will support automatic charging (via a robotic arm) as well as power feedback from the vehicle to the grid in the future. As for compatible vehicles in Chery’s lineup, no details have been revealed yet. China automobile news it only notes that such vehicles will likely be based on 800- or 1,000-volt platforms.
The initial rollout will include 100 MW stations in ten cities, and Chery is expected to announce more detailed expansion plans before the end of 2026. However, it is already confirmed that Chery aims to have more than 20,000 ‘Volt-Dragon’ stations with V2G capability worldwide by 2029. For comparison: BYD reached the milestone of 10,000 ‘flash charging’ stations at the end of August this year and plans to expand to 20,000 units by the end of 2026.
