Barbara Schöneberger and Hans Sigl tackle the World Cup madness – and come up with a plan at “Star Night” that will bring two countries back into the tournament.
Klagenfurt am Wörthersee – Together, Barbara Schöneberger (52) and Hans Sigl (57) will host the “Star Night at Wörthersee” on Saturday evening on MDR and ORF 2. In the middle of the show, Schöneberger suddenly asks her co-host: “Should we talk a little more about football?” Sigl’s clear answer: “Absolutely.” After all, there is no shortage of things to talk about, as world politics suddenly got involved in the World Cup in the last few days.
US President Donald Trump (80) had publicly confirmed that he had lobbied FIFA to have a red card against US striker Folarin Balogun (25) revoked – with success. The ban was lifted and Balogun was actually on the pitch in the 4-1 defeat in the round of 16 against Belgium. For Barbara Schöneberger, the consequences of this World Cup whirlwind are obvious: “I heard that Friedrich Merz is on his way to the Infantino, and I can’t rule out that Germany will be back in the game after the visit is over.” The DFB team was eliminated from the tournament in the round of 16 after a penalty shootout against Paraguay.
Despite Austria being eliminated from the World Cup: Hans Sigl senses an opportunity and wants to “call Trump”
As an Austrian, Hans Sigl shares the sporting fate, as his country was also eliminated in the round of 32 after a 3-0 defeat against Spain. On stage, the 57-year-old promptly countered with his own idea: He would “call Trump tomorrow” – and then the Austrians would be there again. Barbara Schöneberger continues the thread straight away: “Yes, and then Germany and Austria are in the final.” However, Sigl doesn’t let that go without a cheeky warning: “But it will be bitter for you because then we will send you home.”
The answer doesn’t take long to arrive: “In my heart two hearts beat for Austria and Germany. It will definitely end well for me,” replies “Starnacht” host Barbara Schöneberger. Hans Sigl, who millions of ZDF viewers have trusted as the “mountain doctor” for years, immediately came up with a solution with a wink: “Luckily, I’m a doctor and can fix that.”
Sigl remains loyal to the football fever even afterwards. He raves about the Norwegian fans and their new rowing ritual – and wants to get the audience on site excited: “Do we want to do that, ladies and gentlemen here in the stadium? (…) Hands forward, two strokes, and then I’ll hear something from you!” No sooner said than done. The actor loudly sets the beat on the drum directly in front of him – and the entire crowd, including Barbara Schöneberger, throws their arms forward and shouts in unison: “Ro!”
