Large-scale operation: fire surrounded in Müritz National Park

According to the Mecklenburg Lake District, the fire in the Müritz National Park has been contained. So-called water bars were set up, as the district announced.

These irrigate the ground and the trees in the forest area that has not yet burned. The water bars therefore prevent the fire from spreading further. Watering continued continuously in the evening.

The fire on an area of around 388 hectares is currently being fought by 370 emergency services, as the district announced. A firefighting helicopter successfully supported the rescue workers and ended its mission.

Individual columns of smoke can be seen

Individual columns of smoke can still be seen, but there are fewer. According to a district spokesman, fewer columns of smoke also mean fewer fires and embers. The district called on vacationers and tourists to avoid the area.

According to the information, two water cannons were requested from the police in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and a special firefighting unit from Lower Saxony. These vehicles can also be used to work in dense smoke. The special unit started operations in the evening.

Ammunition load makes firefighting difficult

The extinguishing work is made more difficult because there is a former military training area in the fire area. Active firefighting is carried out in the east of the area because it is too dangerous in the other sections due to the ammunition load. In the vicinity of these areas, cartridges can sometimes be heard exploding, said the district’s press spokesman.
