Murder of Charlie Kirk: The defendant in the Charlie Kirk case showed remorse, according to his roommate
The suspect Tyler Robinson, who was charged with the fatal attack on right-wing American activist Charlie Kirk, showed remorse the day after the crime, according to statements from his roommate. Robinson’s roommate said this in a video recording taken in court in Provo, US Utah was shown.
Robinson is currently facing a preliminary hearing in which the evidence is being examined. The aim is to determine whether there is sufficient suspicion to open the main proceedings against the defendant. Robinson is charged with murder, among other things. If convicted, he faces the death penalty.
The 23-year-old was arrested a day and a half after the attack on Kirk. Relatives reported him to the authorities. DNA traces on the alleged murder weapon and images from surveillance cameras also incriminate the suspect.
The roommate now testified that he found Robinson in their shared home on September 11, 2025. Robinson “walked around a lot” in the apartment. He began to cry, according to his roommate’s court testimony, “and he said he wished he hadn’t done it.” Then he continued to walk around and “just did things – I think to distract himself.” The suspect did not talk about the crime in detail. However, he confirmed that his statements from the previous evening were true. The evening before, Robinson and his roommate had exchanged text messages about the crime.
According to roommates, Robinson was fed up with Kirk’s “hatred.”
The hearing also showed the chat messages that Robinson and his roommate exchanged after the crime. In one message, as was read out in court, the roommate asked why Robinson “did it.” He replied: »I had enough of his hatred. Some hatred cannot be negotiated away.«
Charlie Kirk was shot on September 10, 2025 at an event at a university in the US state of Utah and died as a result. Kirk was the founder of the right-wing populist student organization Turning Point USA and played a central role in mobilizing young voters in the 2024 presidential election. Critics accused him of racist, homophobic, transphobic and sexist views. Kirk supported US President Donald Trump in his election campaign and was an influential representative of his Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.
