Parliamentary election in Palestine: The Palestinian parliament is to be elected for the first time since 2006
After more than two decades, a new Palestinian Legislative Council is to be elected. This is the name of the parliament of Palestine. president Mahmoud Abbas According to the Wafa news agency, a decree set November 28th as the election date. Palestinians in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip are called to vote.
In the last election on January 25, 2006, the Islamist Hamas won a majority of 74 of the 132 votes in the Legislative Council. A year later, Hamas took control of the city after violent clashes with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah Gaza Strip. Since then, Parliament has been largely unable to act. The Palestinian Constitutional Court finally dissolved it at the end of 2018.
A parliamentary and presidential election scheduled for 2021 was canceled because there were no guarantees for voting in Israeli-occupied East Jerusalem. In April there were… West Bank and in the city of Deir al-Balah in the Gaza Strip, local elections were held for the first time since the start of the Gaza war.
In March, Abbas promised to restructure and renew Palestinian organizations. There have been allegations of corruption and a lack of democratic legitimacy against the autonomous authority for years. Whether and under what conditions General election can take place is uncertain. Israel has considered East Jerusalem to be part of its indivisible capital since its annexation in 1967 and prohibits official political activity by the Palestinian Authority (PA) in the city. The Israeli annexation is largely not recognized internationally. Hamas is still the central political actor in the Gaza Strip.
It is still unclear whether Abbas will run for president again
The long overdue presidential election is scheduled to take place in the first quarter of 2027. Abbas, now 90, was confirmed as the head of the secular-nationalist Fatah movement in May. He has been the strongman in Fatah, the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) for more than two decades. In 2005, after the death of Yasser Arafat, he was elected president of the autonomous authority, actually for only four years. However, his mandate was repeatedly extended without an election; since then, Abbas has ruled by decree. It is not known whether he wants to run again in the presidential election.
The autonomous authority is based in Ramallah in the West Bank; the Gaza Strip has been controlled by Hamas, which rivals Fatah, for 20 years. On Monday, Hamas said it dissolved its government, clearing the way for a body made up of experts to administer the Palestinian territory. The committee with 15 Palestinian experts, which is currently based in Cairo, Egypt, was founded by US President Donald Trump and appointed by the “Peace Council” he chairs.
