There are many ironies with the Trump presidency. I remember writing about many of them during his first term. Now, however, we have some additional ones. For example, despite his apparent hatred of clean technologies (wind power, solar power, electric vehicles, energy-efficient appliances), Trump has pressured a lot of people to buy electric vehicles, including people who wouldn’t really consider doing so even with normal EV incentives.

Of course, we all know what it is. This was one of the key reasons for the huge blue tsunami that swept across the country this week. Trump’s war on Iran, which many Americans cannot explain in the slightest, raised gas prices enormously and pushed people to go to the polls and vote Republican.

Trump and his team knew it too. They knew that the war against Iran was driving up gas prices and that high gas prices are one of the worst things you can have when you’re running for office. So, although Trump did not leave himself an easy and simple way out of the war against Iran, he calmed or paused his most significant actions against the country in view of the midterm elections and gas prices are not as high as they were a few months ago. They are just above $4 a gallon on average, while earlier this year they rose above $4.50 a gallon. Just in the week before Election Day, the national average price of gasoline fell 12 cents per gallon. Of course, it was too little, too late, and Republican politicians’ lack of concern for families and their high gas costs did not play well in the elections. This was probably the main factor in the turn to the left.

Now that the election is over and, as far as we know, the war is nowhere near being resolved, Trump may be inclined to heat things up again. If it has been holding back, it may try again with full force to force Iran to give in, and this could lead to a further closure of the Strait of Hormuz… which would likely lead to a further rise in gas prices. Naturally, even at $4 a gallon, Trump is winning over many Americans (and humans in general) are thinking about buying electric vehicles, and some of them will go ahead and make the switch. What if Trump goes further, as many now expect him to do, and oil supplies are hit much harder and oil prices soar again? It could become one of the biggest sellers of electric vehicles in history. We’ll see what happens…
