Volkswagen has temporarily suspended development work on the electric ID.Golf. Brand boss Thomas Schäfer first announced the pause in an internal interview, as reported Handelsblatt. The company has since officially confirmed the decision.

“We simply cannot afford this work at the moment,” Schäfer said, according to Reuters. The goal is to resume development as soon as possible. In its statement on the Brand Group Core’s nine-month figures, Volkswagen echoed this sentiment, noting that development work for the future ID.Golf is being temporarily paused “until we can safely allocate the necessary investments.”

The pause is part of a broader cost-savings program. Volkswagen aims to strengthen investment discipline, reduce initial expenses and improve working capital to strengthen net cash flow.

At Brand Group Core, net cash flow decreased sharply in the first nine months of 2026: from €4.34 billion to €1.43 billion. Group revenue remained almost stable at €106.4 billion, but operating profit fell from €4.72 billion to €4.33 billion. Operating return on sales decreased from 4.4 to 4.1 percent.

ID.Golf remains a key SSP model

Volkswagen’s leading passenger car brand is under particular pressure. Its operating profit fell from 1.48 billion euros to 813 million euros in the first nine months, with an operating return on sales of 1.3 percent. Without special measures, such as restructuring, the planned sale of the Volkswagen plant in Osnabrück and the discontinuation of ID.4 production in Chattanooga, Volkswagen says the figure would have been 2.6 percent.

Volkswagen is currently facing a difficult situation. While demand for electric vehicles is increasing, the company notes that battery electric vehicles have yet to reach the margins of comparable internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. As a result, the share of less profitable electric vehicles is increasing, while the volume of more profitable ICE vehicles is decreasing.

Cost pressure is also high at the main plant in Wolfsburg. According ReutersThe plant is currently about €300 million behind its cost target for the year. In contrast, the Emden and Zwickau plants are on the way to reducing their factory costs.

The pause in development of the ID.Golf is particularly significant because the model is intended to be based on Volkswagen’s upcoming Scalable Systems Platform (SSP). The group-wide electric platform is designed to reduce technical complexity and costs, among other benefits. The electric Golf is planned for the early 2030s.

It is not yet clear whether this schedule will be delayed by the current pause. The Volkswagen works council reported Reuters that any time lost could be made up. However, the workers’ representation considers that the freezing of spending is another sign of the group’s difficult financial situation.

Volkswagen explicitly describes the measure as temporary, but has not yet specified when development work on the ID.Golf will resume.
