Iran War: USA: Iran must promise to open the Strait of Hormuz

According to media reports, the USA is demanding a confession from the Iran to free and safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. By Saturday, the Iranian leadership should publicly assure that the strait is open and that Iran will refrain from attacks on merchant ships, wrote the “Axios” portal and the “Wall Street Journal,” among others, citing US government officials. The message was delivered to Iran directly and through intermediaries.

It initially remained unclear what consequences the Iranian leadership would face if it did not comply with the demand. The USA had attacked targets in Iran in the past few days and justified this with attacks on merchant ships.

US President Donald Trump had confirmed on Friday the end of the ceasefire in the Iran war. At the same time, he left the door open for discussions. Trump wrote that Tehran had asked for talks to continue and the USA had agreed. Trump put the word conversations in quotation marks.

More attacks in the Middle East

Recently, the situation in the Middle East escalated again after the warring parties Iran and the USA had actually agreed on a framework agreement for in-depth talks on an end to the war. There had also been a ceasefire since April, but it was repeatedly broken.

The US military had responded to attacks against tankers in the Strait of Hormuz bombed targets in Iran several times. The USA also reinstated sanctions on Iranian oil. Iran, for its part, responded with attacks. Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan, which host important US military bases, also came under fire.

During the war, transit through the important Strait of Hormuz had virtually come to a standstill. As a result, prices on the energy markets shot up. The high prices at gas stations also put Trump under strong domestic political pressure to ensure that shipping works again as quickly as possible.
