Cihan Çakmak: “I’ll come and kick down the door”
In the 260th episode of And what are you doing on the weekend? the artist Cihan Çakmak is a guest. She was born in Osterholz-Scharmbeck in 1993 and grew up in Worpswede. Today she lives in Berlin-Lichterfelde and in Lisbon.
She was awarded the Paula Modersohn Becker Young Talent Prize and the Rössing Prize for Photography. In summer and autumn 2026, the Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen will show Cihan Çakmak’s solo exhibition like a warrior. The Berlin gallery Eigen & Art has also been showing her work since July. In the podcast she tells how she… Berlin cares for her bergamot trees and her pomelo plant.
Your weekend begins with writing down your dreams. When she’s in Lisbon, she starts it with a walk to the sea and sits with a coffee under her favorite rubber tree in the park. In Berlin she makes vegan pancakes for breakfast and then listens to an opera singer who sings in her shared apartment on Sundays. In a conversation with Ubin Eoh and Christoph Amend, Cihan Çakmak also reveals how she became an artist, why she relaxes when she draws – and since when she has been able to make a living from her art.
