Magdeburg: Hundreds demonstrate at the start of the AfD Saxony-Anhalt’s election campaign

In Magdeburg, several hundred people protested against the start of the election campaign AfD Saxony-Anhalt demonstrated. Supporters of the Grandmas Against the Right, the cultural scene in Saxony-Anhalt and members of the churches gathered at the exhibition grounds. A representative of the Evangelical Church of Central Germany said they stood up for values ​​such as democracy, humanity and solidarity. Wherever they are attacked, they want to take a stand.

The rally was registered by the Solidarity Alliance Magdeburg. According to MDR estimates, up to 300 people gathered. The demonstration took place some distance from the AfD event, behind a police barricade.

The AfD Saxony-Anhalt started their election campaign for the state elections on September 6th at the exhibition grounds in the afternoon. In addition to the top candidate Ulrich Siegmund, federal chairwoman Alice Weidel also appeared. She swore to her approximately 3,000 supporters that Siegmund would become her party’s first prime minister.

Surveys see AfD ahead of the CDU in Saxony-Anhalt

A coalition of the CDU, SPD and FDP currently governs the country, and the Prime Minister is the CDU politician Sven Schulze. The CDU was recently in second place in surveys with around 23 percent behind the AfD, which recently came in at 41 to 42 percent.

In Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD is classified as definitely right-wing extremist by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. Its 100-day program calls for an end to public broadcasting, the party wants “deportations from minute one”, asylum seekers and refugees “obliged to work” and special classes for children of refugees. According to the AfD program, schools should “give children the normal family consisting of a man and a woman, from which children emerge, as a role model” and “educate children in the spirit of love for their people and homeland.”
