Parliamentary elections in Israel: Knesset dissolved before parliamentary elections

The Israeli parliament has duly dissolved ahead of the country’s elections. 62 of the 120 MPs voted for dissolution, thus ending the legislative period. The Knesset will be re-elected on October 27th. However, a bill formally setting the election date has been referred back to committee next week due to a deadlock in Parliament.

Israel’s long-time head of government Benjamin Netanyahu is running again as the leading candidate of the right-wing Likud party and has already announced that he wants to form the broadest possible coalition after the elections. “I intend to form a broad-based national government, not a right-wing government, not a left-wing government dependent on Arab parties, but a broad-based national government,” Netanyahu said.

The 76-year-old is currently ruling with right-wing extremists. Netanyahu has headed Israeli governments for more than 18 years, longer than any other prime minister in the country.
