Referee expert calls for red for Olise

The World Cup semi-final would have ended early for Michael Olise. Fans and experts are calling for him to be sent off for his foul on Rodri.
Arlington – It is probably one of the most important games in Michael Olise’s career so far. The FC Bayern offensive player is with France in the World Cup semi-finals against Spain (here in the live ticker) and is playing for what is probably the greatest success of his career. But the winger was lucky in the early stages that he didn’t have to leave the field.
In the 14th minute he fought for the ball in midfield with his opponent Rodri. The Frenchman lost out in the sprint duel and tried to use his long leg to sneak the ball off the Spaniard’s foot. But he came clearly too late and ended up hitting his opponent’s calf with an open sole – a hard foul.
Michael Olise doesn’t even see yellow
To everyone’s surprise, referee Ivan Barton decided to simply award a free kick for Spain and not show the 24-year-old a card. The reactions online were clear. “There was less a red card than for Olise’s foul. Hit pattern, intensity, no chance of the ball. You don’t have to be a referee for that. Not even yellow is really completely disturbed,” said a user on X.

“Clear red card. Ridiculous how Olise doesn’t even get a yellow card,” said another. The IG referee was also in disbelief. “That’s on the borderline of red, yellow but just okay, but no card for the straddling Olise is very borderline in my opinion. If Barton gives a red on the pitch, it stays. Very bad foul with the outstretched leg,” she wrote.
Referee expert Patrick Ittrich also agreed Magenta TV through moderator Johannes B. Kerner at halftime that he was sent off. “Our referee expert, we spoke to Patrick Ittrich, says: ‘That has all the makings of a red card,’” Kerner reported during the break.
Mats Hummels had a different opinion. “Of course it looks very nasty in the still image. For me it’s just yellow because of the lack of intensity, because it just doesn’t go through,” he explained to the ex-professional. But he was also a little surprised that Barton didn’t even unpack the yellow box. “He didn’t do that because Rabiot had gotten a yellow card shortly before. He didn’t want to direct it in one direction,” said Hummels.
So Olise was lucky again that he was allowed to stay in the game. However, it hasn’t really helped so far, as he has struggled against the Spaniards’ defense and has barely been able to pose a threat in front of the opponent’s goal. The Bayern professional is threatened with elimination in the semi-finals, as in the Champions League. (smu)
