Surrogacy abroad: Criticism of Spahn from the Junge Union Brandenburg

In the Junge Union (JU) in Brandenburg there is criticism of the Union faction leader Jens Spahnafter enlisting the help of a surrogate mother in the US with his husband. JU state leader Laura Strohschneider did not agree with the behavior of the former CDU health minister.

“If Spahn himself had been a supporter, I would have found his actions to be legitimate,” said Strohschneider when asked. “However, I expect someone in such a high position to have their private decisions go hand in hand with the positions they publicly represent.”

Surrogacy is not allowed in Germany

Spahn and his husband Daniel Funke announced on Wednesday that they had become parents. A surrogate mother in the USA gave birth to the baby. This sparked criticism because surrogacy is banned in Germany and CDU – as Spahn himself did in the past – speaks out against legalization. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s CDU leader Daniel Peters called for Spahn’s resignation as parliamentary group leader in “Bild”.

The JU state chairwoman rated the debate positively. “I think it’s basically good that the legalization of surrogacy is being discussed again in Germany,” said Strohschneider. The JU is the youth organization of the CDU.
