The warmest, driest and sunniest places

June was exceptionally hot and dry in Bavaria. The German Weather Service registered record temperatures, significantly too little precipitation and above-average hours of sunshine.
Munich – Bavaria was a state of extreme weather in June 2026. This emerges from evaluations by the German Weather Service (DWD). While the Free State is not among the national leaders when it comes to the highest average temperatures, it occupies several top positions in the categories of precipitation and sunshine – and combines both the wettest and the driest places in Germany. Although the weather situation has eased somewhat at the moment, meteorologists are already predicting the next heat wave.
Evaluation by the DWD: That was June in Bavaria
The most rain fell in the Bavarian Alps in June. The three wettest measuring stations in Germany were all in the Free State: Aschau-Stein leads the nationwide statistics with 214.4 liters of precipitation per square meter. Behind them are Ruhpolding-Seehaus with 204.4 liters and Bischofswiesen-Winkl with 196.5 liters.
The other extreme can be found around 300 kilometers further north. Kitzingen was the driest measuring station in Germany in June. There, the DWD only registered 13.3 liters of precipitation per square meter – only around 20 percent of the long-term monthly average. There were therefore considerable differences between the rainy edge of the Alps and the dry Lower Franconia.
Bavaria also appears several times in the top nationwide lists when it comes to sunshine duration. With 300 hours of sunshine, Passau-Fürstenzell came second behind Konstanz. Weihenstephan follows in third place with 297 hours of sunshine. At the same time, Oberstdorf and Garmisch-Partenkirchen are also among the sunniest places in Germany. 195 and 201 hours of sunshine were measured there in June. However, compared to the long-term average, these values were still above average.
When it comes to average temperatures, however, other federal states played the main role. The highest monthly averages were measured in Waghäusel-Kirrlach, Ohlsbach (both Baden-Württemberg) and Bad Dürkheim (Rhineland-Palatinate). Bavarian measuring stations did not make it into the top three nationwide in this category. (Source: DWD), (leo)
