Thunderstorm: Train hits a tree in Berlin – S-Bahn failures
The strong thunderstorms have arrived Berlin led to an accident involving an S-Bahn train with around 100 passengers. Because of a fallen tree, the S-Bahn train on line S1 crashed into a hanging tree in the Sundgauer Straße S-Bahn station in the evening. According to the federal police, the passengers had to wait until the train could continue. The windshield shattered in the collision.
“As things currently stand, no one was injured,” said service group leader Thorsten Peters from the federal police. Train service on the S1 line was interrupted between Zehlendorf and the Botanical Garden. After a little more than an hour the trains started running again. “The route has been reopened,” said a spokesman.
The passengers exercised patience, as Ilija Rankic described: “Then we just sat there for a while and waited for something to happen.”
Lightning strike in Pankow – S-Bahn affected
According to the S-Bahn, a lightning strike in Pankow led to delays, cancellations and restrictions. Lines S1, S2, S8 and S85 were affected. According to a spokesman, it was initially unclear how long the disruption would last.
The S2 only ran between Lichtenrade and Potsdamer Platz every ten minutes. The S85 initially only ran between BER Airport and Treptower Park. From there to Pankow, passengers should use the S8.
Full cellars and fallen trees

According to a spokesman, the control center counted at least two full cellars and two fallen trees in the city of Brandenburg an der Havel and the districts of Potsdam-Mittelmark and Teltow-Fläming. There were initially no major incidents in the city of Frankfurt (Oder) and the Oder-Spree and Märkisch-Oderland districts.
Multiple severe weather warnings
The German Weather Service had warned of some very strong showers and thunderstorms with hail, heavy rain and heavy squalls. Severe weather warnings were issued for several districts, in some cases for extreme thunderstorms with lightning strikes, falling trees, possible damage to buildings and flooding.
The Prussian Palaces and Gardens Berlin-Brandenburg Foundation (SPSG) warned of falling branches in the parks.
Changeable weekend
At the weekend the weather calmed down somewhat, said a spokesman for the German Weather Service. Saturday will be a transitional day with gusty winds at 23 to 26 degrees, before the change in the weather becomes noticeable on Sunday. The maximum temperatures on Sunday will be 20 to 22 degrees. The coming week will also be changeable and significantly cooler. There are also expected showers and thunderstorms.
