Forget the Polestar 1 supercoupe with 600+ hp hybrid propulsion; the car that established Polestar as an independent brand was the 2. As the brand retreats from the US and shifts its focus to the rest of the world, it’s time to look back at the electric vehicle that helped define Polestar, along with a look at some of the best EV deals of all time.
Several European news sites (including electric and TV2 Broome) report that the latest new Polestar 2 has rolled off the company’s Luqiao assembly line, with more than 200,000 all-electric sedans/hatchbacks built in China since the electric sedan launched in 2020. And, while the company hasn’t confirmed that with any sort of official announcement, the news falls in line with the company’s previously announced plans to launch an updated Polestar 2 in 2027, followed by an all-new Polestar SUV 7 which will arrive in early 2028.
With the brand set to withdraw from the US after the Trump administration’s Commerce Department refused to grant it authorization under the Connected Vehicle Rule earlier this year, it might at first seem like US Polestar fans will miss out on that refreshed 2, whatever form it takes, but don’t give up hope just yet.
Volvo 40.2 Concept
First shown in 2016, the original Volvo Concept 40.2 was supposed to be a new entry-level sedan for the now Geely-owned Volvo, which was in the process of spinning off from Ford ownership and the Focus-based C30 coupe and S40/V50 sedan and wagons. And it would have been a great entry-level Volvo too if Tesla’s stock price hadn’t made it worth more than the next five most valuable car companies combined.
See, once Tesla (or, more specifically, $TSLA) did that, every automaker in the world thought the stock market would also bless them with billions and started announcing plans to go all-electric, right now. Volvo’s parent company Geely, however, decided to speed up the process, taking the next two Volvo models in its portfolio (the C90 coupe version of the S90 sedan and the C40 sedan previously introduced by the Concept 40.2) and turning them into Polestars.
A SPAC was later merged and Polestar was spun off not only as its own brand, but also as its own company, largely Chinese owned, which brings us to where we are now.
The best electric vehicle offers in the sector
In the US, the single-motor (RWD) long-range Polestar 3 SUV starts at around $67,500 and offers a 111 kWh battery pack good for an EPA-rated range of up to 350 miles. Meanwhile, the top-tier performance-spec Polestar 3 offers a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup that Polestar rates at 380 kW (~517 hp) that will launch you through the suburbs with a 0-60 mph time in the 4-second range, albeit with slightly less range than the base model… but that $67,500 price tag is really more than a suggestion these days.
Polestar is offering a $23,000 discount on the 3 and a $25,000 rebate, market fit, or whatever on the 4. That means you can get a new Polestar 3 or 4 with Chinese EV technology and more than a little Volvo safety built in for a dramatically reduced price. If you pick the right one at the right dealer, probably under $40,000.
As for 2, I have a personal connection with that one. My son bought a 19,000-mile 2024 Polestar 2 Single Engine Long Range (RWD) in Glacier for under $22k, which is an absolutely shocking price for a fast and capable sports car. sedan hatchback that is not only a worthy successor to the S40 it was meant to replace, but also a solid foundation for an electric vehicle brand that became embroiled in politics.
