Football World Cup 2026: Switzerland is in the World Cup round of 16 after beating Algeria

Switzerland – Algeria 2:0 (1:0)

After a comfortable victory, Switzerland has Algeria reached the World Cup round of 16. At the BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, goals from Breel Embolo (10th minute) and Dan Ndoye (46th) ensured a 2-0 victory (1-0).

Murat Yakin’s team will face the winner of the duel on Tuesday (10 p.m. CEST). Colombia against Ghana.

The Switzerland took the lead with their first attack. Johan Manzambi prevailed on the left side in a running duel with Aïssa Mandi and passed it back from the baseline to Breel Embolo, who only had to push in. It was a bitter start for Algeria, especially since the North Africans had made a slightly better impression up to that point.

Afterwards, both sides lacked clear scoring chances for a long time in an intense game. One of the better opportunities came to Denis Zakaria in the 37th minute when his header from a free kick from Rubén Vargas flew just wide of the goal. On the other hand, Leverkusen’s Ibrahim Maza missed the best chance to equalize from a promising position shortly before the break (45th + 2).

This took its toll immediately after the break. Again it was the first Swiss attack that caused problems for Algeria. This time the ball fell at Dan Ndoye’s feet. Goalkeeper Luca Zidane had no chance against the 25-year-old’s well-placed shot into the bottom left corner. With the two-goal lead behind them, Switzerland then controlled the game confidently, while Algeria hardly made any impact offensively.

Substitute Fabian Rieder still had the chance to make it 3-0, but the Augsburg player shot into the arms of the lying Algerian goalkeeper instead of into the empty goal.
