Jürgen Klopp is the DFB favorite to succeed Julian Nagelsmann. But there are still some obstacles to be cleared out of the way, as Klopp himself admits.

New York – Is everything happening so quickly now? On Friday afternoon German time, Nagelsmann’s resignation and at the same time the DFB’s expression of interest in Jürgen Klopp as the new national coach. But the desired candidate himself is putting the brakes on the euphoria. First and foremost, there is a lack of “time”, as the World Cup expert says MagentaTV explained.

“Even now the timing isn’t perfect,” he continued: “That’s because I’m under contract with Red Bull. But from my side the timing is still better than it ever was. Two years ago, when I left Liverpool, I didn’t have the energy for another task. Now I’m more than recharged – so, I’m ready.”

Klopp before “intensive” talks: with the DFB and Red Bull

“Intense” discussions are on the agenda: on the one hand, with Klopp’s current employer Red Bull. “I have said several times how much I enjoy doing this job and I am a person who usually likes to keep contracts. I know that German football is very important to Oliver Minzlaff and he is therefore very open to these discussions,” said the former BVB coach, looking ahead to the discussions with the Red Bull boss.

On the other hand, there are talks with the DFB, which may start during the World Cup. Klopp is aware of the difficulties: “The problems we are currently having in the national team are of course not due to Julian Nagelsmann’s personality. He is an exceptional coach. That’s why we have to wait for the discussions to take place.”

“When the conversations start, the mental cinema begins. What could you do? German football is now at a turning point. We now have to fundamentally change things. Whether it will be me or someone else in the end – it doesn’t change the fact that the changes are necessary,” the 59-year-old makes the priorities clear. (phm)
