An Austrian fell fatally during an e-bike tour in Upper Bavaria. He wasn’t wearing a helmet – and suffered serious head injuries.
Wellheim – A 69-year-old Austrian was fatally injured in an accident on a county road in the Eichstätt district on Saturday morning (July 4th).
Without a helmet on an e-bike: man dies in Upper Bavaria after serious head injuries
As the Eichstätt police station reported, the man was part of a larger e-bike group and was the first in the group to ride on the EI5 district road between Hard and Wellheim. At around 11.30 a.m., after a crest where the route went downhill, he lost control of his bike for reasons that are still unclear and ended up alone on the shoulder. He was not wearing a helmet, the police said – the result was serious head injuries.
Wellheim is a market in the Eichstätt district in Upper Bavaria.
The remaining members of the group immediately made an emergency call. Ambulance services, an emergency doctor and a rescue helicopter rushed to the scene of the accident. The seriously injured man was flown by helicopter to the Ingolstadt Clinic.
Man succumbs to his injuries in the afternoon
Despite medical treatment, the 69-year-old succumbed to his injuries in hospital that afternoon, according to police. The district road was completely closed for the duration of the rescue measures and the accident investigation. The Wellheim fire department took over the traffic diversion.
The Eichstätt police station recorded the accident in coordination with the Ingolstadt public prosecutor’s office, according to the statement. According to police, the exact cause of the accident is still unclear. (Source: Police) (res)
