Just two weeks after his presentation at 1. FC Nürnberg, game analyst Sebastian Sommer asked for his contract to be terminated. Miroslav Klose must continue to rebuild his coaching staff.
Nuremberg – As soon as he arrived, he left again. Sebastian Sommer left 1. FC Nürnberg after just 14 days. The game analyst, who was introduced at the end of June as a reinforcement of head coach Miroslav Klose’s coaching staff, asked the club to terminate his contract early – and the club complied with his request.
Sports director Joti Chatzialexiou explained the departure with family reasons: “Sebastian told us that he underestimated his family situation, that it was putting a strain on him and that he therefore did not want to continue his job here in Nuremberg.” An understandable reason, but also unusual for a professional club – and a further setback for the Franconian coaching staff, which is already struggling with many personnel changes.
Assist from DFB icon Klose throws after two weeks in Nuremberg
Sommer is no stranger to German professional football, having started his coaching career at the DFB, where he worked successively as a game analyst for the U15, U16 and U17 national teams. He then moved to Borussia Dortmund, where he worked as chief analyst for the youth academy and also looked after the U19 team as a video analyst for over five years.
From September 2023, he gained experience at RB Salzburg for three seasons before 1. FC Nürnberg hired him as a game analyst. The A license holder didn’t come to Nuremberg by chance: sports director Chatzialexiou already knew him from his time together at the DFB and appreciated his analytical qualities. With his commitment, the tactical work on Miroslav Klose’s staff should be further professionalized.
But nothing will come of it now – the 38-year-old’s departure has already been sealed. For Miroslav Klose, the situation is not an isolated case. Sommer’s departure is the 14th personnel change in the coaching staff since Klose took office in the summer of 2024. Sommer succeeded Jerome Polenz (39), who moved to VfL Wolfsburg after three years at FCN due to internal disagreements. Now the club has to look for an analyst again.
Klose himself has stabilized in Nuremberg despite a bumpy start and was even able to extend his contract as head coach in February. Off the pitch, the 2014 world champion recently caused a stir with a personal conversation with Lionel Messi after he broke his World Cup goal record. From now on, Klose will have to take care of the club’s fortunes again – from his point of view, he would probably like to have a new analyst in the team soon. (fn)
