Lake Schwerin: Germany’s most beautiful lake holiday gem

It is bigger than Lake Chiemsee, more magical than Lake Constance – and hardly anyone outside the north knows this lake. The trip is very worthwhile.
Germany has many beautiful lakes. Lake Constance impresses with its alpine panorama, Lake Chiemsee with its islands and Königssee with its crystal clear water. But anyone who believes that the most beautiful sea destinations are all in the south has not yet seen one crucial place. In the northeast of the republic lies a body of water that boasts castles, untouched islands, award-winning water quality and wild nature.
At the top of the map, in West Mecklenburg, is Lake Schwerin. With an area of around 61.54 square kilometers, it is the fourth largest inland lake in Germany, larger than Lake Chiemsee. 24.8 kilometers long, up to six kilometers wide: these are not pond dimensions, they are vastness. Nestled in a gentle, green hilly landscape of the Mecklenburg Lake District, it offers the backdrop of a sea without tides, but with a silence that is rarely found on Lake Constance.
Castle, nature conservation and Blue Flag: What sets Lake Schwerin apart
Perhaps the most impressive feature of Lake Schwerin is its landmark, Schwerin Castle. It sits on its own island in the inner lake, connected to the old town by bridges. The German Foundation for Monument Protection describes it as the “Neuschwanstein of the North” – a building with towers, battlements and ornate facades from the 19th century. The Schwerin Residence Ensemble has been officially a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 2024.
Water and nature play just as important a role as culture on Lake Schwerin. The Schwerin lakes are consistently of excellent water quality, awarded the European “Blue Flag”. The Global Nature Fund named the lake “Living Lake of the Year” in 2015, partly because of the successful combination of tourism and nature conservation. The island of Katzenwerder in the Inner Lake is part of the EU bird sanctuary “Schweriner Seen”. There is still untouched nature here. By the way: This swimming lake is the perfect alternative to Lake Chiemsee.
If you don’t know Lake Schwerin yet, you have a lot to catch up on. Between the White Fleet, which leaves from the Schloss pier every day from March to December, the beaches in Bad Kleinen and Zippendorf and the quiet bays of the outer lake, you can spend a holiday here that hardly leaves anything to be missed. And if you’re looking for more water, space and nature, you should also know this sea in central Germany, which is Germany’s largest reservoir.
